LOCAL INFORMATION
Lombok is a small island paradise just 80km from north to south and about the same from east to west. The area's culture is vibrant and interesting with the local population being drawn from the island's original inhabitants - the Sasaks - and Balinese. Hindu and Muslim are the Predominant religions with a small number of Sasaks clinging to Wektu Telu, a form of Islamic belief found only on Lombok.
CLIMATE/DRESS CODE:
Lombok enjoys a warm, tropical environment. The average temperature year-round is 30'C and cool, informal attire is recommended.
THINGS TO DO AND PLACES TO SEE
GILI AIR, GILI MENO AND GILI TRAWANGAN ISLANDS: A short ride north of Senggigi Beach, a cluster of tiny coral islands offer the perfect destination for snorkeling, scuba diving or picnics on pristine stretches of white sands. Hire a boat to take you out to discover a magical marine world of blue coral, vivid fish and delicate shells.
MT.RINJANI: Explore the central villages of the central north where Lombok's people still find visitors unusual. Here lies legendary Mt. Rinjani, the volcano local people use as a focal point for worship. Trekking through this area is both challenging and rewarding. Guides are recommended as the area can become dangerous during the wet season.
LOCAL WEAVING: Visit the town of Sukarara to discover the heart of Lombok's burgeoning fabric industry.
Beautiful songket fabric is woven on hand looms from cotton embellished with gold and silver thread, creating a beautiful and unique effect in the Island's brightest tones.
PENUNJAK POTTERY: Throughout Lombok, you will discover villagers plying the ancient craft of pottery. The distinctive black clay of the area makes sturdy, attractive artworks renowned throughout the region. Penujak is known for its original designs - you'll discover an unusual "bottomless" water pot. When the water is poured into a hole in the bottom then turned over, the water disappears!
