The Natural Hot Spring is an Adventure Recreation Center at the base of the volcano Mt Batur, set in the midst of one of the largest calderas in the world, a 13.8 x 10 km ellipse created by a huge eruption estimated to have taken placed around 29,300 years ago. Set on the edge of tranquil crater lake, the Natural Hot Spring recreation center provides kayaking in dugout canoes, cycling and trekking and camping in the volcanic mountains of central Bali, with their deep crater lakes, vast lava-scapes and forested hills.

The main volcanic peak of Mount Batur emerged in a large eruption in 1804, and in the early 1900's a second crater was forged on the southwest side. In 1927 Batur village was buried beneath this lava flow. From 1963 to 64, eruptions formed  two subsidiary craters on the west and the south, both of which are currently still active. The last major eruption was in May 1974.

This fascinating lava landscape offers treks tracing the history of the succesive lava flows. The volatility of the area makes guides essential for your own safety, and the well informed. The Natural Hot Spring guides, fully trained and safety procedures, are able to take you right up to the doormant top crater, as well as within a safe range of the more active lower craters. Views from the peak at dawn can stretch as far as Mt Rinjani in Lombok and Mt Tambora in Sumbawa on a clear day.
