Denpasar .

The capital city of Bali, Denpasar has many community temples called "Pura".  The temple of Jagatnatha is dedicated to the Supreme God, Sang Hyang Widi Wasa.  The statue of a turtle and two dragons (prevalent in all temples) signifies the foundation of the world. The Pura Jaganatha Museum offers a fine variety of prehistoric and modem art, and its architectural design is based on that of a palace.

Werdhi Budaya Art Center   

The Werdhi Budaya Art Center was designed by Bali’s foremost architect, Ida Bagus Tugur, also the architect for Indonesia's new National Art, Gallery.  The vast complex is, apart from its very real cultural function, a showplace for Balinese Temple and Palace Architecture at its most opulent.  The open stage Arda Candra with its towering candi gate, the rococo main Art Museum, and Balinese pavilions have become a major architectural attraction.  Built on one of the few remaining coconut groves in central Denpasar, the center has quickly become a busy forum for the performing and fine arts.  With three Art Galleries and a host of stages. Since 1975 the Center has been home to the island's Dance Academy (ASTI), a tertiary level Conservatorium, Dance and Drama School for traditional Balinese Performing arts.

Sanur .

Sanur beach has long been a popular recreation site for people from Denpasar and elsewhere.  The palm-lined beach curves from the Bali Beach Hotel toward the south, facing the Indian Ocean towards the east.  Sanur offers many good hotels, restaurant, shops and other tourist facilities.  It is only a short distance from Denpasar.

Kuta  

Once a lonely village on the road from Denpasar toward the Bukit Peninsula, Kuta is now a thriving tourist resort, popular mainly among the young.  It is a popular beach for surfing although currents make it less suitable for swimming. life guards are on constant duty during the day.  Kuta faces the west, offering beautiful sunsets. Accommodation ranges from international hotels to home-stays. The village abounds with restaurants, shops, discotheques and other tourist facilities.  It is easier to find regular performances of Balinese music and dance in Kuta, staged specially for tourists, than anywhere else in Bali.  Some performances are staged nightly.  The village is ideal for meeting and mixing with locals as well as visitors from abroad.

Tanjung Benoa

Located north of Nusa Dua, this is a beautiful white sand area where visitors can enjoy many types of water recreation and sports such as snorkelling, parasailling, diving, boating, sailing, glass bottom boating and more. This area is an extension of Nusa Dua Resort, with easy access to its luxurious hotels and other tourism facilities.

Nusa Dua  

The Nusa Dua tourist resort is part of the Bukit Peninsula in southern Bali. Some of the most beautiful and luxurious hotels are found here.  The resort is known for its clean white beaches and clear waters.  The surf is gentle along the northern side of the peninsula, bigger along the south. The most convenient form of transportation to and from Nusa Dua is by taxi.

Geger Beach

It only takes 5 minutes to go there from the Bali Golf Nusa Dua. Many tourist often call it as " a hidden Paradise" It's not only because of the beach have clear water it is worthy to be the place for swimming as well as surfing.

Uluwatu Temple

At the western most tip of Bukit Peninsula, this is one of Bali's nine "directional" Kayangan Jagat temples. The location is dramatic, perched on the edge of a high cliff with a picturesque sunset view. The temple was first used for worship by the holy 11th century priest, Empu Kuturan, who came to Bali to bring religious law and to form Desa Adat (tradional villages)The area where the spectacular sunset can be viewed is filled with the scent of frangipani blossoms and is also the home of friendly monkeys.

Nyang Nyang/ Labuhan Sait/ Padang-Padang/ Bingin/ Suluban Beach

Located a few kilometers north of the ancients temple of Uluwatu, facing the vast Indian Ocean. From the parking area, one must descend down stairs and pass through long narrow gap of cliff before reaching the wide beach area. The sea water here is crystal clear and the large waves make it one of the best places for surfing in all of Bali, as surfing lovers throughout the world have already discovered.

Kedonganan Beach

It is about 3 kms south of Bali International Airport Ngurah Rai. The fishing village of Kedonganan. At the northern part of the beach could be seen a traditional fish market and a great number of anchoring "Jukung" or traditional fishing boat which present an interesting view.

To experience sailing around the gulf here by traditional sailing boat give us the picturesque image of west Bali's crescent beach.

Jimbaran beach

Batubulan  

Driving northeast from Denpasar, stone figures on the roadside mark the village of Batubulan.  Divinities and demons are carved from sandstone for ornaments of houses and temples.  Workshops can be visited to watch artists at work.

Batuan  

An old and famous center of the arts, it is now known for its dancing, wood panel carving and paintings.

Celuk  

Northeast of Denpasar, the village of Celuk is noted for its silver and gold works of jewelry in many styles.

Mas  

A village of woodcarvers, many of Bali's old masters still live here.  Art galleries exhibit some of their best works.  Visitors can wonder through the Balinese-style houses to view the carved wooden pillars and the artists instructing apprentices.

U b u d  

The center of Balinese painting, Ubud's Museum "Puri Lukisan" has a permanent collection of modern works of Balinese art dating from the turn of the century.  There are also several art galleries and homes of famous artists here, including that of Dutch-born Hans Snel and American Antonio Blanco. The "Young Artist" styles now popular in Balinese painting was introduced by the Dutch painter Arie Smith.  In the past, other foreign painters inspired Balinese artists to adopt western techniques but traditional Balinese paintings are still highly collectable. The Neka Museum has a wide collection of paintings by Indonesian as well as foreign artists who used to live in Bali. Ubud has several small hotels and is located in the foothills of the central mountain range, giving it a cool, pleasant climate.

Peliatan  

Peliatan is located between Ubud and Mas.  It is known as the center of traditional music and dance.

Goa Gajah .

Goa Gajah, dates back to the llth century and is believed to have been built as a monastery.  Carvings on the wall show a demon head over the entrance, flanked by two statues. The cave contains a statue of Ganesh. Excavations have uncovered a bathing place with six statues of nymphs holding waterspouts.

Bali Bird Park

The Taman Burung Bird Park situated in Batu bulan, is home to more than a thousand birds (250 exotic bird species) from Indonesia and all over the world. Its is set in two hectares magnificent gardens filled with tropical plants, water features and spectacular rain forest in aviary. Also see the famous Komodo Dragon. Has restaurant for visitors to interact with nature by having breakfast, lunch, or afternoon tea with ird.

Tampak Siring  

The temple of Pura Tirta Empul is built around the sacred spring at Tampak Siring.  Over 1000 years old, the temple and its two bathing places have been valued by the people because of the spring water's curative powers.  Regular ceremonies are held for purification.  Specialties of the area are bone and ivory carvings.

Gunung Kawi

These 11th century tombs, carved out of the rock face of the gorge of the Pakerisan river, are approached  by a steep descent through breath-taking rice terrain scenery. Historically, the tombs probably have some connection with King Anak Wungsu. Across the gorge are some more impressive tombs that were the resident meditation caves of the only men who were the keepers of the tomb.

Bukit Jambul

On the way to the mount Batur, Kintamani, there is a stopover with its very enchanting scenery, located parallel to the hill, rice fields and the sea in distance. Restaurants are also available there.

Goa Lawah

About 43 km east of Denpasar one of the most sacred temples in Bali, which was built in 11th century by the high priest "Empu Kuturan" Inside the temple, one will find a natural cave inhabited by thousand of bats hanging down from the ceiling, flying around, and singing as well as holy python snakes that often appear around the cave.

Kerta Gosa.

These pavilions, built in the 18th century, are located at the main road intersection side of the town of Klungkung, 40kilometers northeast of Denpasar. They are especially known for their ceiling murals, painted in the traditional "wayang"style, depicting punishments in hell for miscreants, and higher up on the ceilings you will find the rewards in heaven for those that have led a good and honest life.

Nusa Lembongan

This small island is one of the most popular destinations for day trippers from Bali. The trips can takes about one and two hours from the Badung strait, depending on whether you sail or motor boat. One of the main attraction  of the island is diving and snorkeling, with amazing corals and tropical colorful fishes, crystal clear water and white sandy beaches. Lembongan's large neighboring island, Nusa Penida has a somewhat more ominous reputation and less popular.

Batur.

In 1926, during the violent eruption of Mt Batur, the original village of batur, at the southern foot of the mountain, was totally destroyed. The villagers, unharmed but homeless, moved up onto the high ridge overlooking their original home, and began the task rebuilding their temple, Pura Ulun Danu. Work on this temple is still underway, and they are creating one of the most impressive temples on the island. Its stark meru towers stand out against the backdrop of the smoking volcano.

Kehen Temple.

Just north of the town of Bangli, is one of the largest temples in Bali, and a stirring example of the virtuosity of the stone-carvers of the region. It was founded in the 11th centuries by Cri Brahma Kenuti Ketu. Pura Kehen has three courtyards, each entered through a towering, carved gateway. The second courtyard is a venerable banyan tree

Trunyan

Owes it origins to pre-Hindu times (Baliaga) and still maintains many of its ancient customs. According to legent, the village was founded on the spot where an ancient tree whihc smeeled of incense, stood. The old temple, Pura Pancering Jagat, still stands under a massive banyan tree

Kintamani  

The villages of Kintamani and Penelokan give a view of the active Mt. Batur and Lake Batur.  The caldera of Batur is 7 miles in diameter and 60 feet deep.  From Penelokan, a road leads to Kedisan on the shores of the lake where boats can be hired to cross over to Trunyan.  This ancient village is inhabited by people who call themsleves “Bali Aga” or “original” Balinese, and have maintained many of their old ways.

Besakih Known as the "Mother Temple of Bali", the sanctuary of Besakih on the Slopes of Mt. Agung is the biggest and holiest of all Balinese temples. Over a thousand years old, steps ascend through split gates to the main courtyard where the Trinity shrines are wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings. Around the three main temples dedicated to the Trinity (Shiva, Brahma and Wisnu), are 18 separate sanctuaries belonging to different regencies and caste groups. To the Balinese, a visit to the temple's sanctuaries is a special pilgrimage. Each has its own anniversary celebration or "Odalan".  The sight of the temple against the background of the mountain is impressive, and during festivals colored banner add a touch of gaiety.

Tenganan

Protected for centuries from the outside world by its surrounding walls, the village of Tenganan has maintained its ancient pre Hindu customs through a strong code of no fraternization with outsiders. Tenganan is famous for its double ikat woven material called gringsing, whihc is supposed to protect the weaver with magic powers

Amed and Tulamben

Approximately 1,5 hour from Badung north of Padang Bay, There is most popular diving site or snorkeling in Bali. A shipwreck and a drop-off accessible from the beach offer easy access to colorful under water world. The magnificent coral viewing, also notorious for shark, rays and a wide variety of beautiful fish life. Diving course are also available.

Tirta Gangga

Just north of Karangasem, on the slopes leading up to Mount Agung, is Tirta Gangga, a veritable water playground designed by 6 princes in the Royal Family of Karangasem as a resting placa. The exotic pools and water fountains sustained some damage during the eruptions of Mt. Agung, but the water gardens remain as serene, and tempting as ever, to the weary traveller.

Singaraja

The original capital of Bali, Singaraja is right on the sea, and its harbor has been key to local development, A bustling center of local commerce, its people are noisy, open, and friendly, and reflect their local climate.

Lovina and Menjangan island.

About 10 km west of Singaraja. The black sand beach is safe and wonderful place for swimming and snorkeling. Lovina also offers dolphin viewing. Menjangan island part of the west Bali National Park has the most beautiful coral reefs in Bali. Along with the nearby Labuan Lalang, this is a great place for diving and snorkeling.

Yeh Panas

A litle further east on the coast is Yeh Saneh, and idyllic spot that few people know about. Only a few meters from the spalsh of the surf is a cool freshwater spring around whihc has been built a large pool and gardens for bathers and picnickers.

Gitgit waterfalls

To the south of Singaraja is Gitgit waterfall, Bali's highest waterfall. This beautiful wilderness area is a must for nature lovers who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the larger towns. This is a perfect place to take photographs of Bali's magical scenery.

Mt Batukaru

This 2,278 meters peak towers over the local landscapes, and strongly influences local spriritual beliefs. All local temples have a shrine dedicated to the spririt of coconut shell mountain, and high on its slopes is the public (Kayangan Jagat) temple of Pura Luhur Watukaru.

Alas Kedaton.

Located about 20 km north of Tanah Lot temple. this forest is inhabited by hundreds of monkeys that live amicably. There is a temple where one find something uniges happens. It is when a ritual ceremony held there, no one is allowed to use any kind of fire offering equipment, such s incense and candle. Tens of big of the leaves of big trees attract the visitors who come there

Sangeh Ten hectares of nutimeg trees in the Sangeh forest abound with monkeys.  'Ihe forest is considered sacred, so no wood is allowed to be chopped here. Two temples stand in the middle of the forest and another at the edge.  As they live in this sacred forest, the monkeys are also held sacred and are rather tame, but it is advisable not to play with them.

Tanah Lot One of Bali's most important sea temples, the temple sanctuary at Tanah Lot is built atop a huge rock surrounded by the sea.  Built by one of the last priests to come to Bali from Java in the 16th century, its rituals include the paying of homage to the guardian spirits of the sea.  Poisonous sea snakes found at the base of the rocky island are believed to guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders.  The best time to see Tanah Lot is in the late afternoon when the temple is in silhouette.

Kerambitan

The village of Kerambitan, southwest of Tabanan, was once an extension of the ruling Raja's court and is still a cultural stronghold, with music groups maintaining ancient customs of music and dance, using bamboo instruments.

Jatiluwih

Approximately 20 km from Tabanan, the road climbs up high into the hills to a small village named Jatiluwih. With a height of 850 meters above sea levels, the view here is one of the finest imaginable. Bali's terraced paddy fields stretch into endless contours over the hills and valleys as far as the eye can see

Bedugul  

The mountain resort of Bedugul, 18 km north of Denpasar, is known for its excellent golf course.  Located besides Lake Bratan, it is surrounded by forested hills. A beautiful sight is the "Ulun Danu" temple which sems to rise out of the lake. The area offers good walks.  Boats are available for water skiing and  parasailing. is done as well. The Bali Handara Country Club has bungalows for rent and a restaurant.

Medewi

Located about 72km west of denpasar. The area was a forest with Ketket or thorny trees. the throny forest means Alas Meduwi in Balinese. Because of this people agreed to call it Meduwi, then changed into the current name of Medewi. The beach is flat, stony and has long rolling waves, so its is very suitable for surfing and sunset watching.

Rambut Siwi Temple

Is on clip top overlooking a breathtaking panorama of paddy fields on one side and the balck sand beach on the other. Two caves overlook the sea, each with a view of the fisherman's boats and seabirds hovering above. The temple itself was built by Dang Hyang Nirartha. According to legend, he made a gift of his hair to the temple. Hence the name Rambut Siwi, which literally means Hair worship.

Mekepung (Buffalo races)

The Mekepung was originally held as part of the harvest festivities. The carts and buffalos were, until quite recently still used for transportation. The Mekepung consist of a race between two cars pulled by water buffaloes. The colorful decorated animals race a two km course.
